Reading “The Hero With a Thousand Faces” by Joseph Campbell

The hero’s journey is a prime topic in my current writing curriculum at the University of Washington. When I found out that this book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, was the foundation of the idea of a hero’s journey, I decided to read it.

The prologue felt heavy in academics and my brain hurt, but once the rust on my gears wore off and they turned more smoothly, I was able to enjoy the concepts presented better.  Still, I feel the prologue takes a lot of liberties…makes wide assumptions…it felt as if the author leaped across chasm after chasm based on far flung cultural myths…one line here fueling full paragraphs of ideas, another line there several pages.

Once past the prologue I felt on more solid ground and the ideas seemed more tightly stitched together. I’ll provide  a complete review once I’ve finished the novel.
